Shaun Fogarty wins Wellington Motocross Championship - fullnoise.com.au

Gisborne’s Shaun Fogarty was unstoppable in Wellington at the weekend.
The 25-year-old, now based in Auckland, made the long trip south a
worthwhile one when he cleaned up the two main classes at the Wellington
Motocross Championships near Foxton, New Zealand, on Sunday (Jun-10).

The Red Baron Team West Kawasaki Racing team rider won five of
his six races and took top spot in both the 125cc and open classes.

“Yes, it was a good weekend,” he said, modestly understating his
achievement in beating some of the best riders in New Zealand.

What’s more, Fogarty was on the comeback from a crippling heel
injury which had kept him off his bikes for five months.

“I smashed my heel at the beginning of December and I’ve been on
crutches since then. But I’m on fire now and feeling really good. My
bikes – a Kawasaki KX250F and KX450F – were perfect all weekend,”
said Fogarty, who finished third in the 250cc class and fifth in the
125cc class at last season’s national championships.

“I’m going to be riding the 450cc class at the nationals this year,
so I know I’ve got to step up if I want to compete with the fulltime
professionals,” said Fogarty, who works as a builder during the week.

“I’ve moved from Gisborne to Auckland to be nearer to the team’s
headquarters and to help with bike preparation. Besides, the
competition is a little stiffer in this area than at home and that’s
what I need if I want to move forward with my racing career.”

Runner-up to Fogarty in the open class at Foxton was Upper Hutt’s
Jayden Jessup (Yamaha), with fellow Kawasaki rider Rhys Carter
(Murupara) finishing runner-up to Fogarty in the 125cc class.
