spectators at the third successive Grand Prix of Japan to be
staged at the Sugo circuit. The 21 year old obtained positions of
second and fifth in breezy and changeable weather conditions
even though temperatures remained pleasantly high. An untimely
fall in the second moto while holding a clear runner-up position
behind Antonio Cairoli meant that the Durban-born racer had to
accept fourth overall. Sugo was again a technical treat for the
riders with the bumps and ruts meaning a test of concentration
and strategy. The variety of racing lines on offer was appreciated
by the MX2 contingent even if some of the long jumps proved to
be difficult for the 250cc four-stroke riders to clear. The opening
qualification heat on Saturday saw Rattray set an impressive
speed as he forged through from his top five placing on the first
lap to catch and pass Nicolas Aubin for second spot and then
hound leader and World Champ Christophe Pourcel. He tried to
get close enough to make a pass but was hindered in the final
laps by several backmarkers, the Japanese wild-cards being
some way off the pace. The result however gave him third pick in
