After dominating the second round of the World MX1 championship in
Bellpuig, Spain last weekend New Zealands Josh Coppins has been
noticed big time in America. Not only does the Rinaldi Yamaha rider
have a column in the leading monthly magazine RacerX Illustrated,
but he is also on this week cover of the biggest motorcycle racing
publication in America, Cycle News. The American publications are
working overtime to bring the GP riders into the big picture in
America with the lead-up to the 2007 Motocross of Nations, set for
Budds Creek in September. The amazing thing is even the great
Stefan Everts has only had three or four cover shots in Cycle News,
so it's not easy to get a GP image on the front page. With the World
Superbike round held also in Spain on the same weekend it was nice
to see the MXGP rider getting his just dues. This is a busy part of
the season, with two Motocross Grand Prix’s in a row, and it will be
a good test for the racers of the FIM Motocross World Championship.
Last weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix was a tough round, but racing was
great, thanks to two extremely battled motos in the MX2 class, and
a fantastic Josh Coppins owning both chequered flags of the MX1.
Portugal will play host to the third round of the series this weekend,
on the Crossódromo Internacional do Casarão in Agueda. Both series
leader are Yamaha riders; Josh Coppins is definitely one of the
favourites for the MX1 Title, but there are many rivals out there,
such as Kevin Strijbos, who aims at his first victory of the season.
